Whilst the CSA’s Distance Learning Courses (DLCs) are excellent learning tools they are unfortunately not a nationally recognised qualification, whereas the NVQ Level 3 in Installation & Commissioning is.
This NVQ has also been adapted with the help of the CSA to utilise and enhance much of the work undertaken in DLCs A, B & C and the projects undertaken during the normal course of the commissioning engineers’ day-to-day work. It therefore becomes a natural extension of the DLC courses.
The course consists of 5 modules:

Complying with Statutory Regulations and Organisational Safety Requirements

Using Engineering Drawings and Documents in Installation and Commissioning
Working Efficiently and Effectively in Engineering Handing Over and Confirming Completion of Installation and Commissioning Commissioning Heating and Ventilating Equipment and Systems
Each module has performance and knowledge criteria which are assessed by a qualified assessor. The candidates will be seen periodically by their assessor and with internet use candidate/assessor communication has become easier and therefore the monitoring and reviewing of the work on a regular basis.
For a Grade 3 or 4 Commissioning Engineer the process of assessment should be relatively easy, although we appreciate it is difficult allocating enough time for additional training in this busy world. It is however only a matter of reviewing, collating and indexing information on recent projects, plus some original thought.
It will then be progressively reviewed and observed on occasion by the assessor with on and off-site questions and answers, both verbal and written.
Recent successful candidates felt that the time needed is approximately 50/60 hours to complete the course. With a little over one hour per week devoted to the NVQ, you will complete in 12 months. This is a small time period for a qualification that is recognised nationally and throughout European countries.
